Silage is fermented, anaerobically-preserved green forage that retains nutrients for feeding during dry periods. In Uganda, silage helps dairy, piggery and beef farmers to stabilise feed supply and improve productivity.
- Napier grass (Pennisetum) — dominant forages for silage in SW Uganda; yields high biomass and mixes well with legumes.
- Maize fodder — recommended and used for silage making in Uganda due to high energy; common for maize-growing areas.
- Sweet-potato vines — used in pig diets and silage trials; resourceful for root-crop farmers.
- Mixed grasses & legumes — improves protein balance (e.g., lablab, Centrosema).
