What is Silage?

Silage is fermented, anaerobically-preserved green forage that retains nutrients for feeding during dry periods. In Uganda, silage helps dairy, piggery and beef farmers to stabilise feed supply and improve productivity.

Best crops for making silage in Uganda

  • Napier grass (Pennisetum) — dominant forages for silage in SW Uganda; yields high biomass and mixes well with legumes.
  • Maize fodder — recommended and used for silage making in uganda due to high energy; common for maize-growing areas.
  • Sweetpotato vines — used in pig diets and silage trials; resourceful for root-crop farmers.
  • Mixed grasses & legumes — improves protein balance (e.g., lablab, Centrosema).
